Each year on Candy's Birthday (5/22) we would go out for ice cream... Candy would finish hers in one to two bites. This pic was taken up north on one of those Birthdays. It's one of our favorite pictures.
I dedicate this to Candy .... who we miss everyday in ways big and small. This is for people who wonder why after a year we haven't stoped grieving her.
She will always be our first baby.
Just a Dog?
- From time to time, people tell me, "lighten up, it's just a dog," or, "that's a lot of money for just a dog." They don't understand the distance traveled, the time spent, or the costs involved for "just a dog." We spent $2000 to try to save Candy from her Cancer... even though it took her, she was worth every penny.
- Some of my proudest moments have come about with "just a dog." Many hours have passed and my only company was "just a dog," but I did not once feel slighted. On besdrest, Candy spent more time keeping me company than anyone.
- Some of my saddest moments have been brought about by "just a dog," and in those days of darkness, the gentle touch of "just a dog" gave me comfort and reason to overcome the day. But she never had a bad day.
- If you, too, think it's "just a dog," then you will probably understand phases like "just a friend," "just a sunrise," or "just a promise." "Just a dog" brings into my life the very essence of friendship, trust, and pure unbridled joy. Candy was always happy to see you.
- "Just a dog" brings out the compassion and patience that make me a better person. Because of "just a dog" I will rise early, take long walks and look longingly to the future. After 9/11, we took a 30 hour bus trip home... reason? We missed our Candy "Burger".
So for me and folks like me, it's not "just a dog" but an imbodiment of all the hopes and dreams of the future the fond memories of the past, and the pure joy of the moment.
"Just a dog" brings out what's good in me and diverts my thoughts away from myself and the worries of the day.
I hope that someday they can understand that it's not "just a dog" but the thing that gives me humanity and keeps me from being "just a man."
So the next time you hear the phrase "just a dog." just smile, because they "just don't understand." ~Roca (C) 2006 Thanks Mellisa K. ("Yeager's Mom") for sending me this!

Well said and so very true! No matter what kind of day it has been, there is always one creature on this earth who has no expectations of you and is just happy to see you when you come into the door. Unconditional love. That would be "just a dog" . Caesar is our 3rd child and he is getting up there in years. I understand what you mean in your blog.
